Cheek Bruises I have recently begun to get a bruise on my cheek from the recoil of my new gun. I am a mid-level shooter, and I have a smooth move and mount, but probably once per 25 rounds I will feel myself getting whacked. Can you help me? My guess would be that one of two things is happening (or a combination of the two): 1) Your cheek might not be in contact with the comb of the stock during shot execution, thus the comb might be impacting your cheek as the shot is executed and the recoil causes the gun to jump into your cheek. 2) Your shotgun might not have … [Read more...]
Hartmanns Hint #67 Practice
Practice One recent morning I went to the Tulsa Gun Club to practice. The usual group of shooters were there, and we shot a couple of regular rounds and some doubles, with all of us shooting a few extras where we needed more practice. After we completed our basic practice, we decided to shoot regular rounds in preparation for a shoot that weekend. One of the guys did something I had never before seen him do. He missed the first target on doubles at station 2 and proceeded to get angry with himself and then quit working at the other targets. He had given up after a single miss, and as a … [Read more...]
Question of the Week: Ammo Shipping and Supply
"If I'm going to the World Skeet Shoot or National Sporting Clays Championship at the National Shooting Complex, do I need to pre-order my ammunition?" The NSC carries a large supply of ammunition for our tournaments; however, we do not offer pre-ordering. Our inventory includes all major suppliers with a wide variety of loads in all gauges and is of quantity that participants need not worry about obtaining ammo needed. Participants are always welcome to bring their own ammo or purchase here upon arrival. We will receive and hold for your pick-up upon arrival if you would like to ship … [Read more...]
Center Ocular
Center Ocular My wife is “center ocular.” She is a beginner but seems to only hit birds when she closes her left eye (shooting right-handed). How do you compensate for center vision in gun fitting? Or is she better off just learning with one eye? The short answer is, we never want to adjust the fit of a shotgun to compensate for any “bias” in eye dominance. We treat eye dominance and gun fit as two critical but separate issues with distinctly different fixes. When a shooter is center ocular, it means that they do not have a dominant eye and, in some cases, the … [Read more...]
Hartmann’s Hints: Damaged Shotguns
Damaged Shotguns I recently had a novice shooter ask me to show him how to load, unload, clean, and shoot his shotgun. He had purchased a Remington Model 11-48 at a local gun show for what he said was a good price. At first glance, it looked like a nice, well-maintained shotgun. I always start new shooters with a discussion regarding safety and make sure they understand safety by asking them questions. We then discuss gun fit, mount and stance. During this discussion, the student mounted his newly acquired shotgun, and I saw why he had gotten such a good deal on it. About … [Read more...]
