We are saddened to report that NSCA Level III Certified Instructor Jim Porter passed away on February 6 at the age of 71. Jim was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a nervous system disease that weakens muscles) in February 1995. The doctors gave him six months to live. Jim and his wife, Patty, owned Sportsman’s Emporium in Norco, California. Jim was also a proficient hunting dog trainer and shotgun shooter. We regret to inform you of the passing of Johnny R. Cantu, editor-in-chief of Shotgun Sports Magazine and an influential figure in the world of skeet. Cantu died on March 4 in Dallas, Texas, following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease and leukemia. From an early age, Johnny loved anything that would shoot — slingshots, BB guns, BIC pen barrels, pellet guns, .22s, revolvers, shotguns, big-bore rifles, and bows and arrows. With deep regret, we report the passing of our good friend and Past President of NSSA, Bruce Kinkner. Bruce was an inductee into the NSSA Hall of Fame in 1983 as recipient of the Ray Boller Award, in recognition of his extraordinary service to the association. He was an Executive Committeeman of Zone 7 Skeet Association and a board member of the Arizona State Skeet Association for many years. He was one of the founding members for both associations as well. Bruce is also in the Hall of Fame for Zone 7 and the Arizona Skeet Shooting Association. Heath Wood “Woody” Anderson passed away at his home on November 21, 2021, at the age of 70, following a lengthy illness. Woody was a driving force in the world of skeet shooting, both in Texas and nationally, for many years. He was the TSSA president from 2005-2007 and TSSA secretary from 2007-2018. He served as an NSSA Director and was on the Rules Committee. He was also a long-time board member, skeet chairman, and president of the Dallas Gun Club. Final Shots: Lt. Col. Lawrence T. Drennan, Jr.
Members and staff of the NSSA are saddened to learn that Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence T. Drennan, Jr., U.S. Marine Corps (Ret), received his final marching orders on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at the age of 94. He reported to the Heavenly Father and was reunited with the love of his life and wife of 72 years, Irma. Larry, or LT, as he was affectionately known by many, was born July 12, 1927, in Stonewall, Oklahoma, to the late Lawrence T. Drennan and the late Grace Mary Moshier Drennan.
