Carrying your shotgun while shooting the clay target games When you're at the shooting range you'll observe several methods of carrying shotguns. Break-open shotguns are normally broken open and carried with the barrel pointed in front of the person holding it. I say normally, as you see the occasional shooter with the barrel backwards over their shoulder. I don't think I've ever been hit by a barrel carried in this fashion, but others I've spoken with have, and they said it hurt. If we carry a break-open shotgun over our shoulder, we should keep the barrel in front of us so we … [Read more...]
Hartmann’s Hint #26: Trap and Skeet Are Complementary
Trap and Skeet Are Complementary Many of us have heard something like, "Skeet targets always fly in the same place, so skeet is easier" or "Trap is just so boring." Another saying goes like this. "Trap is easier to learn and harder to master than skeet." There are many people that try to show that their sport is better than another one, but I believe that if it's with a shotgun, it's fun and that it takes a level of skill to be proficient at whichever sport it is. I have shot most of the clay target sports at one time or another. I call myself a 'homeless bunker shooter,' as that was a … [Read more...]
Hartmann’s Hint #25: Volunteering At Your Club
Volunteering At Your Club The NSSA-NSCA Target Talk dated January 22, 2018, had my hint, 'Getting Involved With Your Club'. While it's common for me to get some comments regarding the various hints, this one drew several from multiple different clubs. As soon as Target Talk hit the street, I started getting 'emails of appreciation' from people who are trying to run their particular clubs with whatever help they can get. The common statement is, "it's the same five or 10 people who volunteer for every task." Most clubs have upgrades planned or in the works that you might be able to … [Read more...]
Hartmann’s Hint #24: Unload Your Guns
Unload Your Guns Many years ago. a group of my friends and I went Rabbit hunting near the South Central California towns of Taft and Maricopa at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley where there are some Texas-sized Jack Rabbits. There were six or seven of us that frequently hunted together, and another four guys we knew joined us a little later in the morning. We had never hunted with this new group before, and they seemed to be less experienced than our group. The area we were hunting in had rolling hills that slowly rose in elevation, and we walked two or three hours going up one … [Read more...]
Hartmann’s Hint #22: Watching Other Shooters
Watching Other Shooters Recently, we shot a one-day registered skeet shoot, just the 12 and 20 gauges. Four of the kids we teach through the SCTP were also shooting the competition, one of them on our squad. The rest of our squad was made up of experienced skeet shooters. One of the shooters, our squad leader, had a very unorthodox style. He had shot for many years and developed a method of hitting a significant number of targets with this style of shooting. His first two rounds were solid, but his last two rounds were significantly worse. While his method of shooting worked for him, I was … [Read more...]
