Hartmann’s Hint #61: You Can’t Be Too Safe

You can't be too safe   Safety is something that should always be central in our thinking. It's difficult to think about shotgun shooting without thinking about the things we have to do to make it a safe sport. One safety consideration when you're shooting shotguns is to make sure you only carry shells for the gauge you're shooting. One of the things that older shooters will remember is when 20-gauge shells were red just like the 12-gauge shells were. The reason the manufacturers and the sport changed the 20-gauge shells to yellow was for safety reasons. If, back in the … [Read more...]

Barrel Angle

Barrel Angle   Is it generally better to keep the barrel angle on the target line throughout the move from the hold point to the break point, or should it start below the target line at the hold point, then move up toward the target line until just before the break point?   Muzzle angle, or barrel angle, is a critical element of the ready position. Inappropriate muzzle angle can cause a shooter to occlude the target with the muzzle (if too high), or generate excessive gun movement if the muzzle is too far removed from the target line. First, let’s differentiate “principles” … [Read more...]

Question of the Week: Course Preview

"At a registered shoot, am I allowed to walk the course to view the targets before I shoot it? If I do that, am I allowed to take notes or draw diagrams?"   Yes, you can do both. You are not, however, allowed to shoot a non-registered event on the course before the registered event. You can see the rule about shooting a course prior to a registered event in the NSCA Rule Book. See E-2-a on page 37. Brett Moyes NSCA Director … [Read more...]

Question of the Week: Membership Packet

"I joined and paid my membership dues at my first shoot several weeks ago. Why haven't I received my membership packet yet? Since I don't have my membership number yet, can I participate in another shoot?"   When members join at a shoot, clubs turn in the registration and dues with their shoot report. Clubs have two weeks after a shoot is completed to submit the shoot and pay the fees and dues collected. After that, the new member registration is processed and the packet is sent out. So, it can take several weeks for you to receive it. One thing you can do is check the Skeet Late … [Read more...]

Cheek Bruises

Cheek Bruises   I have recently begun to get a bruise on my cheek from the recoil of my new gun. I am a mid-level shooter, and I have a smooth move and mount, but probably once per 25 rounds I will feel myself getting whacked. Can you help me?   My guess would be that one of two things is happening (or a combination of the two): 1) Your cheek might not be in contact with the comb of the stock during shot execution, thus the comb might be impacting your cheek as the shot is executed and the recoil causes the gun to jump into your cheek. 2) Your shotgun might not have … [Read more...]
