Seeing the Target How often do you recognize that you didn't really see the target as you shot? Either you blinked at the wrong time or your barrel came into your primary focus and your eyes were drawn to the barrel. I believe that my greatest fault (in shooting) is, at times, losing sight of the target for one reason or another. I know that my gun has a beautiful barrel and that I can look and admire it when I'm not on the station calling for a target, but I still have a tendency to let it get in the way. One of the ways that I try to keep this tendency under control is by holding … [Read more...]
Ask the Instructor: Hitting Kill Spots
Hitting Kill Spots My break points tend to vary a bit. I usually break the targets in the same general area, but I tend to pull the trigger when everything feels and looks right. Is that okay? Shouldn’t I put more emphasis on focusing on the target rather than breaking the target in a certain place? Commitment to break point is one of the essential requirements of consistency in sporting clays. If, at a particular sporting clays station, you break the first target of a pair in a different place each time, then you are shooting a different target each time. If your break … [Read more...]
Contribute Your Memories to NSSA-NSCA-NSC History
NSSA-NSCA is compiling a written and pictorial history of the sports, the associations, and the National Shooting Complex to preserve the memories and insights of our longtime members who recall earlier days, events, and people that contributed to what the associations are today. Off-Season Practice There is nothing short of improving your vision or your stamina that can help maintain or improve your skill level as well as practice. How you practice is also an important facet of the maintenance and/or improvement of your skill. Incorrect practice can be detrimental and may hurt your skill. Normally we can get practice at the range during the spring, summer, and maybe during autumn, but for some of us, winter is a little too cold or wet to go to the range for practice. Then, we have to do things a little differently in order to keep or improve our skill level. … [Read more...]
Shooting in the Rain
Shooting in the Rain When we are planning to shoot during inclement weather, we prepare for it. We get our rain gear, spray protectant on our shotguns, and generally make sure we're ready for the weather. At the Mini World, I usually sign up by myself and therefore shoot with people from different places in our greater shooting community. I meet some really interesting people that way, and some with great personalities, too. For the four guns of the 2018 Mini World, we only had rain in two rounds, one round each of two different guns. I had my rain gear, made sure I had protected my … [Read more...]
