Sights Recently, I noticed I have a tendency to look at my sights when shooting sporting clays. A friend told me that many shooters have started taking the sights off of their guns. I haven’t heard of this and am hesitant to make alterations on my gun. Your opinion? Perhaps the most important phrase in your question was, “recently I noticed I have a tendency to look at my sights.” Clearly something has happened to make you more barrel conscious than you were before, and the possible causes are numerous. 1) Have you changed shotguns or your setup? If you changed your … [Read more...]
Ask the Instructor: Long Barrels
Long Barrels Last month I bought a sporting clays gun with 32-inch barrels, and as a result, my scores have fallen sharply. I started out with 28-inch barrels then moved up to 30-inch, and now, with the longer barrels, I can’t seem to catch up to the target. I’m 6’5” and 250 pounds so the gun does not seem too big to me, but any tips for improving my scores would help. Answering your question is sort of like trying to conduct a gun fitting by email or Skype. It’s impossible! But allow me to speculate. First of all, I seriously doubt that a two-inch difference in barrel … [Read more...]
Ask the Instructor: Consistency
Consistency Sometimes I shoot lights-out and other times, not so much. It’s aggravating to know my potential when I fall short of my potential 80 percent of the time. What’s the solution? Consistency is the Holy Grail for competitive shooters, but it’s elusive for many. Consistency is the number one goal of competitors that come to me for first-time lessons. For students whose goal it is to reach and remain at the top of the leaderboards, I coach them on three pillars of consistency: 1) Commitment to break point, 2) Planning and executing to plan, and 3) Commitment to … [Read more...]
Ask the Instructor: Leading Crossers
Leading Crossers Is there any difference between a right-to-left target and a left-to-right target in terms of perceived lead? Roger Silcox once talked about left-to-right needing extra lead, or perhaps he meant extra effort (for a right-handed shooter). Do you recognize this in your move/mount? Roger Silcox was a legend; a coach’s coach. I wish I had known him personally. The phenomenon that you are referring to is the comparative difference in “perceived lead” of a left-to-right crosser versus a right-to-left crossing target for a right-handed shooter. For a right-handed … [Read more...]
Final Shots: Chris Cantrell of Rocky Creek Sporting Clays
The entire sporting clays world was stunned by the unexpected death of Christopher "Chris" Dean Cantrell on February 17 at the age of 38. Chris was the well-known and popular general manager of Rocky Creek Sporting Clays in Richburg, South Carolina, since 2013. Prior to that, he was general manager at Forest City Gun Club in Georgia and Milford Hills Hunt Club in Wisconsin. Rocky Creek was open for shooting the day following Chris's death, with management commenting, "Chris would want people to come out and enjoy the sport he loved so much." A memorial service was held on February 21 at … [Read more...]
