Ask the Instructor: Leaning In

Leaning In   "Is it OK to lean against the stand when shooting? I like to lean against the stand, and for some targets, it helps me stabilize my body."   There are three basic reasons why leaning on the stand is a bad idea. First, it negatively affects your balance. One of the key principles of good movement is maintaining one’s balance throughout a shot pair. Secondly, when you lean against the stand, you are essentially limiting your body’s ability to move above your body’s point of contact with the stand. Whether the target is moving horizontally or vertically, your body … [Read more...]

Ask the Instructor: Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain   "How do shooters deal with chronic shoulder pain due to recoil? I don’t have time for rehab or surgery, and I am at that point in my life that it’s causing me problems."   Recoil can be an issue for some shooters. It is unfortunate that you have waited so long to address the issue. Because recoil issues can cause other shooting flaws and habits to surface, I always encourage students to immediately address recoil issues. Assuming that you are a sporting clays competitor, here are a few ways to address recoil issues: 1) Reduce the load you are using. If you … [Read more...]

Ask the Instructor: Scorecard Gems

Scorecard Gems   "I’ve been shooting in the mid 60s and low 70s. In studying my scorecard, I miss the first or second bird more frequently than the other six. I realize it must be my shot plan, but I’ve been unable to adjust. Can you help?"   I strongly urge shooters to take a picture of your scorecard after each and every tournament. After the competition, you can study your scorecard and identify areas of weakness in your game. I discuss this at length in “Revelations of the Scorecard” available at www.doncurrie.com/revelations-of-the-scorecard. Repeatedly missing the … [Read more...]

Ask the Instructor: Finger Pain

Finger Pain   "My trigger guard is impacting my middle finger on recoil. What is the cause of this? I have never had this problem before. I’ve been shooting the same shotgun for months and I’ve made no change in ammo. Any suggestions would be appreciated, because it’s beginning to affect my shooting. I’m anticipating the recoil instead of concentrating on the target."   There are three possible causes for bruising of the middle finger due to impact from the back of the trigger guard when the gun recoils. First, your trigger-to-grip distance may be too short for the size of your … [Read more...]

Ask the Instructor: Comb Adjustment

Comb Adjustment   Short of having a gun fitter adjust my comb, how can I be sure that my adjustable comb is in the right place and adjusted properly?   Most senior instructors would be more than glad to take a quick look at your shotgun and help you adjust it without charge, but here are a few tips for the do-it-yourselfer. Find a mirror inside your home or in the clubhouse and stand in front of it, facing the mirror, with the muzzle of your unloaded shotgun about six inches away from the mirror when you are fully mounted to the shotgun. Use a whiteboard marker to place a … [Read more...]
