New Guns I plan to buy a new shotgun soon. Assuming that I’m looking for an over-and-under shotgun, what are the most important factors I should consider? As a dealer, importer and gun fitter, I often get asked, “What gun should I buy?” I usually respond with “it depends.” Below are the five criteria I use to narrow down my clients’ preferences. I don’t use the answers as a checklist necessarily, but I ask my clients questions around these five areas in order to determine the best solution for their individual needs and wants. Before pulling out your credit card, you might … [Read more...]
Ask the Instructor: Hitting Kill Spots
Hitting Kill Spots My break points tend to vary a bit. I usually break the targets in the same general area, but I tend to pull the trigger when everything feels and looks right. Is that okay? Shouldn’t I put more emphasis on focusing on the target rather than breaking the target in a certain place? Commitment to break point is one of the essential requirements of consistency in sporting clays. If, at a particular sporting clays station, you break the first target of a pair in a different place each time, then you are shooting a different target each time. If your break … [Read more...]
Hartmann’s Hints: Shooting in Wind
Shooting in Wind Several months ago, the Tulsa Gun Club held the annual St. Patrick's Day Shoot. As always, it was a well-run shoot with over 60 shooters braving the cold and WINDY conditions. The weather in Tulsa that month had, until that weekend, been warm and mostly calm, but because there was a shoot, Mother Nature had to show us that the last of cold, windy days weren't over - it was still winter. For the conditions, we had some pretty good scores, and I believe that almost everyone had fun. Of course it's always more fun if you shoot those good scores. I've found that, … [Read more...]
Hartmann’s Hint #49: Shooting Twice At the Same Target
Shooting Twice At the Same Target I've been helping a gentleman learn to shoot skeet. He's shot trap and some sporting clays and recently started shooting skeet, and he's interested in shooting registered skeet. I've worked with him once or twice a week for the last month, and he's picking the game up pretty fast, but today he shot twice at the same target. I had to explain to him that this is something that would get him removed from an event as it's a safety violation. If you get into the habit of shooting twice at the same target during practice, chances are you may … [Read more...]
Hartmann’s Hint #54: Illness
Illness A friend of mine from another state called me recently and told me that he had been diagnosed with diabetes. He also told me that he thought that his recent decline in shooting seemed to be caused by this illness. He was having a problem with his eyes. They had been gradually getting worse over the last year. He wasn't seeing leads the same as he used to. He asked me what I would advise a shooter whose eye-dominance may have changed. He had always been a right-eyed, right-handed shooter and was 'AA' or 'AAA' in the four guns. This shooter is in his late 50s, had shot … [Read more...]
