Ask the Instructor: Cross Dominance

Cross Dominance   I am a right-handed shooter and left-eye dominant. I know I am handicapped from the start, but can I still learn to shoot well like this?   Yes. For a variety of reasons, some shooters insist on shooting from the side opposite the dominant eye, a situation referred to as cross-dominance. In many cases, cross-dominant shooters don't want to retrain themselves to mount to the dominant side, or they have some physical limitation. Whatever the reason, you must figure out a way to put the nondominant eye (on the shooting side of the cross-dominant shooter) in … [Read more...]

Hartmann’s Hint #12: Get Involved in Your Club

Get Involved In Your Gun Club You go to the club, shoot a little, visit with some of your shooting companions and have a pretty good time.   The club house is usually comfortable, depending on the season. There are tables and chairs where you can settle in for a little R&R. The restrooms are pretty clean, too. The green areas are normally mowed, the machines are usually throwing good targets, and it's a generally nice place to shoot. The reason these conditions exist is that the club has a Board of Directors, a manager, and members who volunteer their time to keep the … [Read more...]

Hartmann’s Hint #11: Wannabes

Wannabes There are several "wannabes" at every club. You know, the guys that jump on a field as soon as they have an opportunity to impress someone with their so-called knowledge.   I was recently told about one of these that went up to a teenager at a registered skeet shoot and told this teenager that he could help him improve his game. The teenager had just (five minutes before) shot his fifth or sixth 100 straight. The kid is very talented. The 'wannabe' has never been close to a 100 straight, but there he was. It's great that clubs have people that want to help new shooters … [Read more...]

Ask the Instructor: Basic Fit

Basic Fit   I’m at the point in my shooting that I really want to improve. What should I do first: get instruction or get a gun fitting?   Both! A good instructor should be able to check basic gun fit and start you on a path of improvement in your shooting proficiency. While there is a big difference between the gun fitting expertise of the average instructor and that of a professional gun fitter, NSCA certified instructors are taught to evaluate basic gun fit and how to make modifications to a shooter’s shotgun when practical. Visibility and comfort are the two most … [Read more...]

Hartmann’s Hint #10: Missing

Missing   Is missing a frustrating and aggravating experience? Of course it is.   When we miss, we feel let down, wonder what happened, and sometimes go so far as to dislike a particular target because we miss it frequently. Missing is a fact of life - even the greatest shooters miss occasionally. They just don't dwell on the miss while still competing but wait for the proper time to analyze and fix whatever the problem may be. Sometimes they seek help from other skilled shooters and/or instructors. You can easily look at missing as a bad thing; after all, you may not … [Read more...]
